How about some Christmas Music for the Home?

Five Suggestions from SVSIR

Holiday MusicSun Valley is entering one of its busiest times of the year.  Families who own second-homes are coming to enjoy the season, ski, and catch up with old friends.  Locals are praying for snow and putting up lights, readying for the valley’s temporary population boom.  Sun Valley Sotheby’s International Realty’s 33 diligent agents are planning Open Houses, sending cards to clients, and preparing their own families for the invariable rush of showings.

But no matter how many ads urge you to go buy stuff, part of the point of the holidays should be to just relax, do crossword or jigsaw puzzles, lounge in your pj’s until 11, and sit around the fire with a totty or glass of wine (even if you’re still in your pj’s and it’s still 11!).

Whether you are in a vacation rental, a second home, or your own home, we here at SVSIR want to help make your holiday in Sun Valley even more festive.  Like a musical Santa, here are five holiday-flavored Christmas album suggestions.  And as a stocking stuffer, we’ll suggest an appropriate Accompanying Holiday Beverage (AHB).

Johnny Cash doesn’t immediately come to mind when thinking about Christmas music.  Christmas with Johnny Cash collects a number of holiday recordings that he made over his career, and unlike a lot of Christmas albums, he really personalizes the standards, even telling stories about his childhood.  You won’t be walking through the tree-lit streets humming these tunes, but there’s something about his voice and the short days that fits together.  AHB—egg nog and brandy or whiskey.  Don’t forget the egg nog.

Christmas Rocks, by The Brian Setzer Orchestra, puts a rockabilly spin on all the standards.  With a sleighful of irreverence and blazing guitar work that will set your Yule Log on fire, this upbeat collection will make you want to get a tattoo of Santa, or Mrs. Claus, on your bicep.  AHB —Jagermeister from the freezer, PBR chaser.

Remember when Michael Jackson was awesome?  When his voice was sweet and a little sassy, before he packed so much baggage that even Santa wouldn’t have been able to haul him around?  The Jackson 5 Christmas Album will remind you why he was so great, once upon a midnight star.  Big hair and shirt collars, and bright songs with just enough bite to them.  AHB —soda pop!

A Charlie Brown Christmas is almost the perfect holiday album.  It’s not number one here because nostalgia can’t win.  But Vince Guaraldi is a genius piano player, and it all just feels so warm and cozy, like Linus’s blanket.  Even 49 years after it was released. (“Sigh.”)  AHB —milk and cookies.

Number one, at least this year, is Cool Christmas Blues, by the late blues crooner Charles Brown.  Mellow, soulful, and pitch-perfect, Brown’s eleven tunes have almost a gospel feel to them, such is the command of his voice.  Best-known for “Merry Christmas Baby,” this album will make you want to give everyone you know the gift of hugs and love.  Perfect.  AHB —mulled red wine.

Christmas music makes the lights sparkle brighter, the snow whiter, and your Sun Valley home a little warmer.  From all of us at Sun Valley Sotheby’s International Realty, have a cheerful and warm lead-in to Christmas!
